Sauntering For Fresh Food

What a good girl am I. Today I finally walked to Foods Co. for cat litter. Of course I couldn't stop and bought 2 pounds of carrots for 99 cents for juicing. Foods Co. is an amazing store at times. Maybe it has to do with my mood. This time I was so impressed with the fresh grapes, 2 pounds for $2, and avocados, 5 for $2.98.

I resisted though. I have a shopping list and try not to deviate. The list wants me to complete it by shopping at a small produce store on the corner of Divisadero and Page. The strawberries are $1.68 for a large basket and they look fresh. Cherries are still in season, and they're sold here for $1.49 a pound. A deal.

Only buy what you can eat for the day, adage of Joseph Distefano. And it's probably true. We always ate fresh salad, every night. Chicken was the other staple, one breast per person. Or we would buy a whole organic chicken from the Berkeley Bowl and roast it.

Joe was a teacher and mentor in so many ways. I became more sophisticated with him, but still shy, and prone to overweight. That's why I eat chicken occasionally, or beef rarely. I am a chameleon, a social meat-eater. Fortunately, I'm in a healthy diet phase. I have committed myself to get healthy, quit smoking, and lose weight.
